Lab-grown diamonds are diamonds that were grown by scientists in a lab. They share the same chemical makeup as natural diamonds, and are optically identical. The biggest differences between natural and lab-created diamonds are how they're made, and how rare they are. Natural diamonds form below the surface of the earth over millions of years, whereas lab-grown diamonds can be created in a lab over a period of a few weeks.
Are lab-grown diamonds genuine?
Diamonds that are grown in labs have the same chemical composition as their natural counterparts, both being made up of pure carbon arranged in a cubic crystal structure. The primary difference between lab-grown diamonds and their natural counterparts is their formation process. Natural diamonds are formed deep within the earth's crust over millions of years, while lab-grown diamonds can be produced in a laboratory within a matter of weeks.
How are lab-grown diamonds made?
There are several ways to create lab-grown diamonds: Typically, lab-grown diamonds start off as tiny lab-grown diamonds that resemble seeds. The seeds are placed into an enclosure called a plasma reactor (in the case of CVD synthesis) or a large mechanical press (if produced by HPHT), and then the crystals are grown layer by layer using a combination of heat, pressure and a carbon source, depending on the technique used.

How are lab-grown diamonds graded?
Lab-grown diamonds can be evaluated using the same criteria as real diamonds, considering the four factors of diamond quality: Cut, Color, Carat, Clarity. Both the GIA and IGI provide detailed reports that follow the grading process of natural diamonds, but also indicate that the diamonds are lab-grown. At CARATUS, we do not provide individual certification for each stone as we consider it to be unnecessary. One of the main advantages of lab-created diamonds is the capability to consistently produce top-notch stones, so we ensure all
